Alan says: I’ve always loved twangy guitar instrumentals and surf guitar songs like those written in the 60s by groups like The Ventures, Surfaris, and Shadows. Hydraulics was written fairly quickly - in about 30 minutes, which is very fast for me. The band gave it a heavier feel and sound than I’d originally envisaged (with both the bottom E on the guitar and bass being tuned down to D) but I’m really pleased with how it came out. It was basically recorded live in the studio with only a couple of overdubs.

The song was originally called HD Special, after the 1966 Holden stationwagon I used to drive. I might use that name for another instrumental ...
